[Gone Gold] November 5th

Just two this week, but one's a doozy.

As we enter the busiest time of the year, the unholy juggernaut that is the 4th Quarter lineup, many games will be announced as having "gone gold," so many, in fact, that we might just get away with being extra lazy and lumping them all into a story at the end of the week.

For the uninitiated, a game going gold means it's effectively done. The final version of the code has been pressed to a master disc (back in the day it was actually gold colored, hence the name) and has been sent off to be mass produced (pending a final screening, test and approvals process from the big three, mind you). In most cases, this means the game will be hitting stores in a matter of weeks, so to keep you abreast of when things are hitting, we'll plug it in here, possibly throwing in a quote or two if a publisher is feeling especially verbose.

And now, for this week's fun:

[PlayStation 3]
[Rock Band] | Release: November 20th
It's finally done. Harmonix's evolution of the concept they first began with FreQuency has morphed a few times, first becoming a more mainstream music game, then a guitar-based phenomenon has culminated in a full band experience, featuring guitars, vocals (which also comes from past experience) and drums in an online-enabled, downloadable album music game juggernaut.

"Rock Band is a true symbol of Harmonix's vision, dedication and passion for music and after two years of development, we are thrilled that Rock Band is finally ready to get in the hands of rock fans everywhere," glows Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopolous. "We have a small army filling our warehouses with final product, ready for our November 20th ship date so players can fulfill their rock and roll aspirations. Now, our focus is putting together an amazing selection of downloadable music content for players so players can continue to further customize their Rock Band experience post launch."

[Soldier of Fortune: Payback] | Release: November 20th
Activision's ultra-gory license has gotten a little life breathed into it thanks to Cauldron. Now you too can blow off individual limbs of your adversaries and... um... well, they haven't really said much more about that game, but we're sure it's just a fun-filled romp through gumdrop medows and chocolate rivers.

[PlayStation 2]
[Rock Band] | Release: December 18th
Though it lacks the hi-def visuals and the online component, the local play of the PS2 version of Rock Band should be every bit as fun with some beers and buds. The PS2 version is shipping out just under a month later, but still makes it in time for Christmas -- or whatever holiday you tend to observe around the end of the year.

Publishers: Want to make sure we've got your games in our Gone Gold blurbs? Just kick over those press releases or a note from the team to GoneGold@TotalPlayStation.com and we'll make sure they get tossed into the rotation.
