I know this is blasphemy, especially from someone who loves fighting games, but I can’t get enough Smash Bros. In fact, the whole reason I bought the Wii was to eventually play Brawl and, though I ended up selling the system, I don’t regret my purchase. I poured a ton of hours into that game, and would happily do so again if my memory were wiped and you told me there was a new Smash. Others on our staff roll their eyes at my love of the series, but I just can’t help it.

It was always fun to speculate who Sony could come up with, should they ever venture down that road. I mean, a PlayStation mascot brawler would be a blast. My teenage self would have yelled “Cloud!” and “Crash Bandicoot!” as must haves, along with others. So when it was first announced that PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale was indeed a thing, I was stoked. Sure, I love reading a good “hurf durf, Sony has no characters” joke every once and awhile, but still. It was an exciting time nonetheless.

I’m not here to debate the originality of the title or who is or isn’t in. That’s to be saved for another date. Well, I shouldn’t say that, there’s tons of topics on various message boards that you could run and check out right now. What I am here to tell you about, though, is the game’s current beta. We were lucky enough to get a code to check out the game and the honor of taking it through its paces was bestowed upon me. Even though it’s a beta, it’s still a nice appetizer to hold me over until the game’s release later this year. Would I love to play as the Big Daddy? Absolutely, but I’ll just have to wait!

If you haven’t already, I urge you to check out Vince’s preview from a few months ago. He was lucky enough to play the game and examined things thoroughly. This preview is an extension of his work, so go ahead and check that out and come right back.
