Ubisoft Announces Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
Prince of Persia has more spinoffs than Law and Order!
Published: December 1, 2009
OK, so I have played most every Prince of Persia game ever made. I still stand by the fact that nothing beats the original. Yeah, maybe I'm a grumpy old gamer, but Jordan Mechner was the MAN back in the day! Karateka was probably the most amazing thing I had ever seen, right up until his Prince of Persia took it's place. And The Last Express is one of the most underrated and overlooked games EVER. I mean, go play it today, it still hold up over a dozen years later!
But yeah, lets try and recreate the Prince of Persia Timeline...
1989 - Prince of Persia is released. It features incredible animations for the time, as well as a cool time-limited game that was one of the first of it's kind.
1994 - Prince of Persia 2 : The Shadow and the Flame is released. A worthy sequel to the original, it featured improved graphics, more combat and varied level design and better controls.
1999 - Prince of Persia 3D - Pretty much an abomination. Terrible 3D graphics, even for the time, obtuse controls and boring level design makes this the most forgettable entry in the series.
2003-2005 - Prince of Persia :The Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones are all released. The trilogy of game marks a reboot of the series, pretty radically changes the gameplay and focuses way more on combat. The story has nothing to do with the previous entries, but the games themselves are well received and very entertaining.
2005 - Battles of Prince of Persia is released. I have no idea about this DS game at all. It SOUNDS like some sort of Strategy RPG, and wikipedia reveals that yes, it is a turn based strategy/collectible card game. It also links the stories of Sands of Time and Warrior Within
2005 - Prince of Persia Revelations is released. A PSP game that was a port of Warrior Within.
2007 - Prince of Persia Classic released. A fantastic remake of the 1989 game, featuring massive improvements in graphics and control, yet still retaining the simplistic combat and exploration-style gameplay. Not to be missed!
2007 - Prince of Persia Rival Swords is released. A PSP and Wii port of The Two Thrones.
2008 - Prince of Persia is released. Another reboot of the series, breaking away from the Sands of Time trilogy and featuring "cuter" cel-shaded graphics and extremely forgiving gameplay.
2008 - Prince of Persia : The Fallen King released. A DS spinoff of the 2008 Prince of Persia game with even cutsier graphics and emphasis on platforming.
So, if you were keeping track, the series has rebooted three time (I think Prince of Persia 3D counts as a reboot), had a remake of the original, and spawned multiple spinoffs form the main story. And now Ubisoft is bringing us BACK to the Sands of Time storyline with their latest release...
Today Ubisoft announced that Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands(TM) video game is in development and is scheduled to be released May 2010 for consoles and handhelds. This new installment in the critically-acclaimed franchise marks the return to the Prince of Persia® Sands of Time storyline. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands(TM) will feature many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand.
