We here at the TPS offices used to have some epic nights exploring the depths in Spelunker HD. I mean, sure, they were also frustrating nights, but in those fiery cauldrons true companionship is forged. I mean, we tried to tell everyone how much retro-fun the game is, but it never really hit its stride in this country.

Tozai games, much like the titular Spelunker himself, kept digging in, and now, rather unexpectedly, they are gracing us with a nice juicy update with some fresh DLC for this underserved classic.

The update drops tomorrow, and it includes both an improved viewing interface for MP games (I actually like the elegance of the old style, but lets see what this brings) and the first content pack that adds a new area with 10 new levels.

Additional content packs will add 70 more levels for the price of $1.99 per pack of 10 levels. These will be made available "very soon". These new levels aren't for the faint of heart. If you've played the original game, you know it's pretty damn tough, yet the Championship levels make those seem like a walk in the park.

"Fans in Japan salivated over each Championship Expansion release, but we're excited to now be offering them all at once to both North America and Europe," says Scott Tsumura, Tozai's co-founder. "Spelunker addicts beware, because the new stages really turn up the heat! To wit, Championship mode provides fifty lives at game start as opposed to only five in the original mode."

If you haven't yet experienced the joy of Spelunker, this is as good a time to jump in as there could be. Hey, if you've got PS+ (and you should), the game AND the DLC are both 50% off this week. Let's explore together!
