The Way of the Samurai series has been one of my favorites. The fact that you can do just about anything and the game can take on any tone imaginable based on your decisions appeals to me. It's a sandbox of fun and it has lots of swords and awesome moments. Way of the Samurai 3 was a bit of a disappointment but nothing can damper how much I love the franchise.

XSEED Games is bringing the critically acclaimed Way of Samurai 4 here to the States some time this summer. It will take players through a post-isolationist Japan and the power struggle between three factions attempting to out-power grab one another. The the shogunate pro-governmental forces, the nationalistic isolationists, and the foreign powers who are heavily influenced by the British Navy all bring something unique to the table. As players select and embark on missions they will shape loyalties, make enemies, and craft a story of their own.

β€œWay of the Samurai 4 is the latest installment of a prized series that we know will be well-received by fans here,” said Ken Berry, Director of Publishing at XSEED Games. β€œIn this new game, much more will be told of the epic battles fought in Japan in a way that further evolves the series, including branching storylines, multiple endings, a unique online element, as well as some random silliness and craziness that players have come to expect of the brand.”

The combat system will have bladed and gunpowder-based weapons and the online will allow you to download and upload player characters. They will then roam around in your game as assassins and defeating them will gain you their equipped spoils. It's a neat concept and I look forward to seeing how it is implemented. Also yes, the Japanese voice-overs will be left in and accompanied by English subtitles.

One final thing before we go: the game will be a downloadable title from the PSN. How cool is that? Be sure to check back as we learn more.
