Konami Rolls Out Metal Gear Online Patch

And before you read any more, no, Trophies aren't included.

Let it never be said Konami and Kojima Productions aren't committed to their flagship game this generation. Despite being released a whopping two and a half years ago, The Big K will be rolling out a new update that tweaks a handful of options for the online multiplayer portion of Metal Gear Solid 4 (or, if you're really lucky, a stand-alone package that was online released in Japan).

In truth, this is probably something that's meant almost exclusively for Nihongo-speaking players because, well, they're just about the only ones still playing the game. But people are clearly playing -- something Konami no doubt wants to point out while hopefully bringing in a few new players. Yes, this is the part where you rant under your breath about how a Trophy patch for vanilla MGS4 would do more to actually bring the community back, but give up, kids, it's never gonna happen.

Lest you think this is something that's just happening out of the blue some years after the original release, think again. KojiProd has actually been pumping out post-launch content for a while now, including the GENE, MEME and SCENE updates that added, among other things, nine new maps and a half-dozen new playable characters, each with their own unique powers that do everything from automatically sharing the locations of nearby players to anyone linked up to one-shotting players with a sniper rifle to resetting the clock in a match. Plus, SCENE added Raiden and friggin' Vamp.

So yeah, there's actually quite a bit to digest should you hop back in, and Konami's hoping these new changes will make that whole idea even more attractive:

[o] Drebin Points for weapons have been adjusted.
[o] Weapon parameters have been adjusted.
[o] Skill parameters have been adjusted.
[o] Skills for Unique Characters have been adjusted.
[o] Player Character movement has been increased overall.
[o] Idle Kicks have been implemented for Auto Matching.

As you can see, they aren't exactly small changes, but lean heavily toward tweaking what was already there rather than adding something akin to the three expansions. Though no official release date has been announced, we'll be sure to update you should we hear word on when it goes live. Or... you could always start playing the free online component after grabbing your copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 so you can really appreciate the tweaks when they are pushed out to the public.
