After a suspiciously quiet Game Developers Conference, Sony leveled the big guns on retailers at the annual Destination PlayStation meeting. The yearly buyers' conference set the stage for a legitimately megaton announcement: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is coming June 12th, and it'll be bundled with an 80GB PlayStation 3 and a DualShock 3 controller, all for just under $500.

In addition to the usual Metal Gear Solid goodies, the game also ships with a Metal Gear Online Starter Pack to whet your appetite for some multiplayer fraggin', and folks the decide to pre-order the game are automatically added to the multiplayer beta list for MGO when it hits in late April. Not a bad little pre-order bonus if you ask us.

"Working closely with our retail and publishing partners and sharing our hardware and software roadmaps at Destination PlayStation gives us a great opportunity to outline some key milestones for the year. In response to incredible demand, we will be manufacturing more 80GB PS3s for North America and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 80GB PS3 bundle is an ideal way to offer that continued value to our consumers," glowed Sony Computer Entertainment America pres/CEO/head honcho Jack Tretton. "With Blu-ray having won the format war, our stellar software line-up and a broad product portfolio, we will continue to drive the incredible momentum we've been generating since last fall."

The bundle wasn't the only bit of news, mind you. Sure, it was the biggest bit of news, not only because it means we'll only have to wait another four months or so for MGS4, but because Sony is clearly prepping for a comeback. For those that can't wait for the bundle, DualShock 3 controllers are arriving (perhaps fittingly) on tax day, April 15th, for the hefty price of $54.95, just in time for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. As anyone who has given in to the siren's song of importing a DS3 from Japan will tell you, once you feel wireless rumble in your PS3 games, there's no going back.

On the PSP front, Sony is also apparently pouring plenty of support behind God of War: Chains of Olympus (as well they should, the game is awesome), though it's a little odd that they're going to be releasing a red PSP bundle with Kratos' mug on the back (a la the white Vader-emblazoned Star Wars Battlefront bundle) a good three months after the game is released, but hey, we can't think of a better way to lure in the last few stragglers that will have listened to people sing the game's praises for weeks (well, not beyond giving the game away for free, but that ain't happening). The $199.99 "Deep Red" version also comes with a coupon for a free download of Syphon Filter: Combat Ops and a copy of Superbad on UMD.

One thing is for sure: 2008 is the PS3's for the taking, and Sony's definitely off to one hell of a start... or will be in just over a hundred days.
