The Majin Challenge Pack

And boy-howdy do they mean challenge.

Sneaking and battles and puzzles, oh my! The new DLC for Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom definitely adds a little more depth to an already fun action / adventure game. I recently heard Majin referred to as “a hidden gem of 2010.” And I have to say that I am inclined to agree. In my review of Majin I indicate that while there are some parts that can be irritating at times (the animal voices for example), there are also some features that, I believe, make Majin stand out over other games from this genre.

Back to the new DLC though. For the piddly price of $2.00 you can add three new modes to the robust game. Upon downloading the DLC, the new modes become available at any save point. As you traverse the world of Majin and go further through the game, more levels of Stealth Challenge, Battle Challenge and Puzzle Challenge will become available. And I can say with the utmost honesty that when they say challenge – they really mean it. Each challenge can be completed. It just takes some time to find the tricks.

The Stealth Challenge is exactly what it sounds like. You find yourself minus the Majin in a setting that you have already come across in the recent past. There are a set number of bad guys scattered across the stage in some strategic fashion. Your job is to dispatch each bad guy without being seen, otherwise it is automatic failure and you have to start again. There’s another wrench to throw in the gears here though. Depending on how long it takes you to complete the stage, you’ll be given a rating. If your rating is B or lower, you get no reward. So no big deal, right? You’ll just go through again and try to pull it off more quickly. Yeah… easier said then done buddy! Achieving an A rank is pretty difficult to say the least. Achieving an S rank should constitute the developer taking you out to dinner! As it stands, however, achieving either ranking opens up a costume piece for either Tepeu or Majin.

The Battle Challenge was easily my favorite. As the stage starts you find yourself and the Majin in a large, circular room. You are then beset by wave upon wave of bad guys of all shapes, sizes and flavors. The goal here, like in the Stealth Challenge, is to finish off the challenge in as little time as possible. You’ve got your full range of abilities plus Majin’s to accomplish this. While I had an easier time with this mode it still took three tries to achieve an A rank. This mode shines brightest for me because I enjoy the battle system in Majin. Working with your massive nature-buddy is an enjoyable experience. So to fight off a hoard of bad guys was just downright fun for me. I didn’t mind having to play through the mode three times to get an A rank. This was NOT the case with Stealth Challenge which I had to play through upwards of 10 times. I found myself having to plan exactly how long I could run before I had to drop into a crouch to sneak.
