The Last Guardian and Ico/Shadow of the Colossus delayed

I weep while my wallet rejoices.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America confirmed Wednesday that both the highly anticipated Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection and their sequel, The Last Guardian, have been delayed from their respective launch windows of Spring 2011 and Holiday 2011.

The worst part of the news is that no new launch window for either game was specified in the announcement. The Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection was tantalizingly close to its original release window, probably within the next few weeks. Now we have no idea when it will be ready for release, and the only official word is that they will "announce the new release timing at a later time" for both it and The Last Guardian.

You can read the full, albeit terse announcement at the PlayStation Blog, including a message from director Fumito Ueda himself. No concrete reason was given for the delay; just that more time was needed "to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users" and that the team is "working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality." Hopefully the production isn't running into problems, and the team is simply polishing the titles to a Charlie sheen. I mean mirror sheen.

The only real upside to this news is that it will give everyone's wallets a fleeting chance to breathe during the ridiculously overloaded holiday 2011 schedule. With games like Twisted Metal, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, and even more all slated for that small time frame, it's not like I need any other must-purchase titles to vie for my attention. At least it gives me a reason to continue living through the end of the year.
