Activision has not only confirmed the latest Guitar Hero, they've given it a brand new name: Guitar Hero World Tour.

As the name implies, Guitar Hero is all about taking on the persona of a guitar hero and rocking your way from the garage to the arena. This time, however, there's a few other instruments that might make Guitar Hero something akin to Rock Band. For the first time, drums and vocals will make their electronic debut in Guitar Hero, letting players take on the roles of front man and drummer. Players will even get the chance to create their own music, sans vocals, as well as play through an online Band career mode and an 8-player "Battle of the Bands."

Guitar Hero World Tour features only master recordings (no cover bands here, thanks) straight from bands like Linkin Park, Van Halen, and Sublime. There's even tons of downloadable content in the works, which doesn't include what budding rock stars will be uploading. Character customization has been taken to the next level, with Neversoft Entertainment taking a page out of the Harmonix playbook and allowing players to completely configure their character to their liking, along with band logos and album covers.

"Guitar Hero has set the standard for music-based gaming and with Guitar Hero World Tour and the game's groundbreaking Music Studio, we are once again delivering unprecedented innovation that has the potential to revolutionize consumer generated music, much in the same way that video sharing hubs have driven user generated video," said Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing for RedOctane.  "With the introduction of our advanced high-quality new wireless instruments, in-depth customization options and advanced online functionality, the game enables music fans and gamers globally to share in the most social and expressive music experience ever."

Guitar Hero World Tour is shaping up to be a one-two punch. With their new music creation tools and online music sharing program called GHTunes, they're taking the entire music-game genre to the next level. Will you be ready to step up when it's time?
