[E3 2009] Final Fantasy XIV Online Announced
Where did that come from?
Published: June 2, 2009
While a lot of big stories were leaked prematurely, Sony managed to save a few surprises for their press conference earlier today. Among those surprises was the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV Online. Set to be released sometime in 2010, this looks to be Square Enix's latest venture into the MMORPG market. Even bigger news is that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3. There was no mention of a possible PC release, but it does seem possible. At the very least, you will not be playing this on an Xbox 360 or Wii.
As far as the contents of the game goes, not much is known outside of speculation based on a trailer that appeared to be CG. A bunch of adventures battled some evil looking squid thingies on an airship while a flying sea dragon like creature provided air support. The sequence closed with said group looking over a forested cliff down at a waterfall occupied valley, a chocobo buddy tailing behind. This has led many to giddy squeals of "chocobos are in the game yay oh god yes I wouldn't play it without them!" That's great and all, but but we'd trade all the chocobo riding in the world for reduced grind and less reliance on min/maxing.
The only supposedly concrete information at this point is the exclusivity, the release date, and the fact that it will launch will language support for Japanese, English, French and German. Oh, and all the splendor takes place somewhere called Eorzea.

Update: Multiple sources are confirming that there will indeed be a PC version.
