Sony Rocks Out at Coachella

Where's there's music, there's music games. And, uh, Sackboy?

One of the greatest things Sony ever did when first jumping into the games industry was sticking the original PlayStation in clubs all over Europe. Not only did it link the system with the then-budding electronic music craze (ahh... good times), but it helped catapult games with a strong musical component like WipEout into the limelight that much more easily.

Flash forward more than a decade and Sony's still pushing to link the PlayStation brand with music, though of course the genres have expanded just a bit. That's not to say there isn't still a strong electronica component to the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this weekend in the desert of Indio here in our home state of California.

Dubbed the "PlayStation Oasis," Sony's Coachella presence is an all-consuming media blitz, and The Big S has partnered up with Global Inheritance to make a donation to the charity once they hit 1000 text messages on each of the three days. To help get folks texting, Verizon and AT&T customers can snap a photo of the JAGTAG barcodes at the Oasis tent and zip that off to 524824 to get "a multi-media message from Sackboy."

On the games side of things, visitors will be able to play LittleBigPlanet (no doubt with some slick little custom-built levels that are at least partially musically-themed), Buzz! Quiz TV which will of course feature general music and special Coachella-themed quizzes, plus versions of Fat Princess, Crash Commando, Flower and PixelJunk Eden -- all while Sony Music artists are pumped through the speaker system, of course. Those keeping their eyes open will also get trailer glances of Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time, inFAMOUS.

If nothing else, the PlayStation Oasis should provide a nice break from the sun and heat of Coachella during the day, and if you're a PlayStation superfan, you'll find plenty to dig into on top of getting a respite from our nearest star. We'll see you guys (and hopefully more than a few girls) down there!
