Back in 2003, Activision and Splash Damage decided to release a new expansion pack for the highly coveted title Return To Castle Wolfenstein for the PC platform. This new team multiplayer game, entitled Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, became an enormous success on the PC, leading Activision to produce a second Enemy Territory game, this time set within the Quake universe.
The new game; Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will feature an engaging storyline that will take place prior to the events in Quake II. Unlike Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, which was essentially available as a free download pack, this new game will be sold as a stand alone title. The game is currently being developed for the PC utilizing a modified form of the Doom 3 engine along with MegaTexture rendering technology, which can be used to eliminate or reduce the amount of repeating textures within a single environment.
The PC version is currently being developed by Splash Damage and is set for a release date of June 5th, 2007. Earlier today, Activision confirmed that this title will also be heading to the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 platforms. The PlayStation 3 edition will be developed by Z-Axis; the same development team that brought us the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX titles (and sadly, they are also the same folks who brought us the rather provocative BMX XXX ... )
"We're pleased to be working with Nerve and Z-Axis to bring the highly-anticipated gameplay from Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars to the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system," quietly quipped id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead.
In Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, players will have the option of choosing to defend humanity as a member of the Global Defense Force (GDF), or choosing to destroy humanity as the savage and relentless Strogg alien creatures. Players will then be able to select from one of five unique classes of either the GDF or Strogg armies, with each class outfitted with an exclusive set of weaponry and combat hardware. There will be a number of vehicles that can be accessed within this game, including quad-bikes, tanks and alien walkers for ground assaults, along with helicopters and anti-gravity ships for aerial attacks.
The current PC version has already won more than 15 awards since its announcement in 2006, and has been selected as one of the most anticipated new titles for 2007. All versions of the game will be developed under the watchful eye of id Software, who will serve as the games' executive producers.
We will have more information on this title as it becomes available.
