There you have it! It's all in the title. Assassin's Creed 2 is officially in development for “all current gen platforms”. Oh wait, does that mean handhelds as well? Wow, that would be awesome, wouldn't it? But not as awesome as the mere fact that Ubisoft's assassins stealth/action -adventure is definitely going to hit PS3s, 360s and PCs near you this fall/winter. At least that is what Ubisoft is planning.

Assassin's Creed was one of the best games of 2007 with a very impressive 8 million(!) units sold worldwide across all platforms. As those of you who finished the game know well, its ending was veeery open and with the sales numbers backing it up it was only a matter of time until its successor was made official. Being shortly after a first Assassin's Creed 2 teaser hit the web (there were some Leonardo DaVinci sketches to be seen -- and wings!) this is an even smaller surprise. And still knowing that they are going for a release within 2009 is great news!

According to Ubisoft our beloved Altair is going to be replaced by an Italian rich kid who runs by the name Ezio, lives during the time of the Renaissance and has some beef with the other families. Somehow sounds like a Sopranos prequel to me, doesn't it? Ubisoft also confirmed Assassin's Creed 2 as an open world game (everything else would've been stupid wouldn't it?), while promising more variety to the missions and offering something unexpected and new in terms of gameplay.

"Our creative team is working hard to top the experience of Assassin's Creed,” assured Patrice Desilets, creative director at Ubisoft. "We've made improvements to every aspect of the game. We've plunged ourselves into the stunning history of the Italian Renaissance so that we can offer fans a unique, varied and innovative Assassin's Creed experience.”

[Update]: According to Ubisoft's official site the game will arrive on 360, PC, PS3 and NDS. There is no official mention of a PSP version. However Germany's "Bild" had Jade Raymond over for an interview and they claim a PSP version as officially announced instead of a DS version. Interesting. We will definitely follow this and let you know as soon as we know more.
