Man, you know you are old when you remember that the Ace Combat series started out as Air Combat way back on the original PlayStation. I can still remember how amazing it looked for the era, and how much damn fun it was barnstorming under the bridges. I never suspected the series would morph into Ace Combat and give us some of the most bat-shit insane and melodramatic story lines and over-the-top air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

Times change, we move on to other generations, but the Ace Combat series keeps chugging along. Now on it's 12th iteration over a half-dozen platforms, Namco Bandai has just launched Ace Combat Assault Horizon, unleashing a new entry onto the PlayStation 3 for the first time. Arcade flight combat sims aren't a dime-a-dozen anymore, and eager fans have been lapping up the demo to the tune of over a million downloads so far.

So what does Assault Horizon promise? A bevy of series staples, like a dramatic story, a whole plethora of new aircraft to pilot, including never before seen in the series flying machines like helicopters, the opportunity to act as a door gunner, stunning graphics and a robust collection of online modes.

Us being us, we are most excited about the new co-op mode that promises to take eight of the campaign missions and rework them specifically for online co-op for 2 or 3 players. Enemies will be craftier in this mode, forcing you and your virtual Iceman and Cougar pals to work together to get the drop on those bogies before they come around to your six and send a sidewinder straight up your tailpipe. You won't all have to fly the same aircraft, so taking the time to select the right equipment to cover dogfighting, standoff and surface combat will come into play, and the game will assign missions to each player based on their strengths and weaknesses.

Of course we don't all want to work together, and Assault Horizon promises to let you fire a Phoenix missile fairly frequently at your friends. In addition to dogfighting and deathmatching, Assault Horizon will introduce the Capital Conquest mode, tasking a team with capturing the opponents HQ in the given time, and will feature FPS staples like respawn zones, "medic" abilities and class based unlocks. It all sounds like a fantastic package that we personally can't wait to get our hands on.

Oh, and if you want to see more about the games, Assault Horizon may just set the record for most media covering one game on TPS. We have over 450 screenshots up on the site, as well as a trio of hi-res trailers that really let you see just how gorgeous the game looks and a pretty in-depth preview. Grab yourself a warm cup of coffee and settle down for the next few hours and peruse them all. You'll be happy you did.
