We should have known something like big like this was bound to happen soon. With Wrestlemania 22 kicking off this weekend and THQ hosting its fourth annual Superstar Challenge last night, it's only logical for the company to feed off the hype and announce the newest addition to the WWE videogame family, WWE SmackDown Vs. RAW 2007. The kicker? It’s hitting all three Sony consoles: PlayStation 2, PSP and our beloved yet belated PlayStation 3.

"We are pleased to bring our highly successful WWE SmackDown vs. RAW franchise to next generation consoles," proclaimed Kelly Flock, executive vice president, worldwide publishing, THQ. "As the publisher of the number one wrestling video game brand in the world, we are eager to take this franchise to new heights by offering the game to current generation, next generation and handheld gamers."

This year’s biggest update doesn’t pertain to what’s going on in the ring, but rather outside of it, where some intense fighting can now ensue. Players can now put to good use the multiple objects littering the inside and outskirts of the ring – what THQ is calling “environmental hotspots – even if it means plucking them from the crowd and going medieval on an opponent. The actual wrestling aspect of the game has been enhanced with new high impact combinations moves and an Analog Control System to smooth over character movement and handling.

"We are excited about the next groundbreaking release in the multimillion dollar SmackDown vs. RAW franchise," uttered Nelo Lucich, vice president of interactive, JAKKS Pacific. "WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 combines ambitious, exciting features, such as the interactive fighting area within the crowd and a brand new analog control grappling system, which enhance the WWE video game experience. We are confident this debut will offer a compelling sports entertainment experience for the next generation of gamers."

Also getting the enhancement treatment is the Season Mode, now with multiple branching storylines, General Manager Mode, online play (with voice support and so much more), and updated rosters to boot. Oh, and don’t forget those high definition graphics that actually look… well, we’ll leave the impressions to you.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 will layeth the mutli-console smackdown this fall, hopefully meaning the PS3 will follow through with a November launch. Now see those sweaty men on the left side of the screen there? Yeah, check ‘em out.
