DOA4 Garners Higher Sales Against VF5 In Japan

As surprising as it would seem, the sales for Dead Or Alive 4; a XBox 360 title released more than a year ago beat out sales for Virtua Fighter 5, which was released earlier this week.

Over the weekend we mentioned how Virtua Fighter 5 wasn’t exactly burning up the sales charts, with large amounts of the game seen at Japanese retailers. Now a report from Japanese-based Mainichi News seems to paint an even uglier picture for the console in Japan.

According to the website, total sales for VF5 when released on February 8th, 2007 amounted to roughly 30,000 copies sold. When you examine the fact that nearly 600,000 PS3 consoles have now been sold overseas, that would mean that only 5% of the total PS3 userbase actually purchased the game.

Mainichi News then ran a comparison between these sales and the sales of Dead Or Alive 4, when it was released back in December of 2005. DOA4 managed to sell a much higher amount per console, with 60,000 copies sold for the 80,000 XBox 360 units that were sold in Japan at the time. This means that 75% of the total Japanese XBox 360 userbase ultimately decided to purchase the fighting game.

The news website went on to mention that the newly released Sega joystick (designed exclusively for VF5) has apparently turned out to be defective. Sales of the product have immediately ceased for now while Sega works out the technical issues.

We will have more information on this story as it breaks.
