2K Welcomes The Darkness

Oh, hey, the rumors were true.

One of the biggest mysteries after Majesco announced they were dropping out of the high-profile console publishing biz to stick to what they were best at -- budget titles and handheld releases -- was what would happen to The Darkness, one of the first titles we started watching when it game to next-gen development.

It wasn't just that we're huge Top Cow fans and getting a next-gen comic license was music to our ears, the fact that Starbreeze Studios, the folks behind the Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick in-betweener Escape from Butcher Bay were helming the project. Surely a company that keen on doing a license justice could work some serious mojo with next-gen hardware, but not if they didn't have publisher.

Almost as soon as Majesco had jettisoned the projects, though, rumors began swirling about who had picked up the games (we even commented on it in our last Top Cow story), and 2K Games was the loudest possible suitor. As it happens, the rumors were true. 2K is indeed going to be publishing the game, which means of course it's time for a happy dance.

"The Darkness video game is a dynamic first person shooter that allows players to call upon the forces of the evil underworld as they fight in gritty, urban environments,” spurted Christoph Hartmann, Managing Director of 2K Games. “Armed with an arsenal of guns, gamers will battle an array of demonic creatures and supernatural powers. The dark and dynamic comic book storyline will translate perfectly into first-person action that fans will love.”

Clearly our friend Christoph is high with excitement, because he didn't even finish his speech before catwheeling down the halls screaming, "The DAAAAAHKNIZZZZZ!" over and over again... Or so we hear.

The Darkness is a great franchise and we’re proud to be developing the game with 2K Games, Starbreeze and Union Entertainment,” adds Matt Hawkins, Top Cow’s President and COO.

See? Happy dance time!
