Darkness Falls on the PS3

Majesco unveils another game in development, comic adaptation The Darkness.
Author: Neall Price

It’s very pleasing to my jaded gamer eyes to see that the PS3 launch or post-launch lineup will contain markedly adult games, in the tradition of The Suffering or Hitman, rather than the years-long wait that we endured for the genre after the release of the PS2.

In a press release today, game publisher Majesco announced that it will release (among other things) a next-generation console video game adaptation of the popular comic book series, The Darkness, in 2006.

The Darkness, a comic series begun in 1996 and currently published in over 19 languages around the world, chronicles the trials and tribulations of a Mafia hitman, Jackie Estacado, who is imbued with a supernatural power named The Darkness. The game will follow Jackie’s attempt to harness the chthonic energies and overthrow his boss, promising to blend a supernatural horror story with a gritty, modern crime drama.

The publisher of The Darkness, Top Cow, is probably best known for it’s comic series Witchblade. Virtually all of Top Cow’s products are in development for feature films, including The Darkness – it’s scheduled for a 2007 release, about a year after the game’s release. Paul Jenkins, a longtime The Darkness writer, will script the game’s storyline and dialogue. For fans, this means a game faithful to the comic in spirit, if not in fact.

To develop the game, Majesco tapped Swedish developer Starbreeze, whose latest release was the Xbox/PC release The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. That game was renowned for it’s graphical prowess, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do with the powerhouse PS3.

"We are excited to have secured Starbreeze, a highly talented and respected team, to develop one of our first titles for the next generation of video game consoles," gushed Majesco president Jesse Sutton, who called the combination of the development team and best-selling comic a "solid foundation for success."

Majesco and Starbreeze have promised to unveil more about the project at E3.

As of yet, there’s no working chipset for the PS3 (or no real finalized hardware), so it will be interesting to see how far they can go without a working console. In addition, this lends a bit more credence to the rumors that a playable PS3 will be at E3.
