Let There Be Stunts!

It’s under a new publisher, made by a different developer, but the death-defying auto action of Stuntman is nonetheless roaring back onto the scene this summer.

2002’s Stuntman, amidst its generally favorable for the reviews (though the game’s unforgiving trial-and-error play had something of an impact on our final review), introduced a fairly exotic element into the the age-old driving genre: to be racing, not against opponents, nor in time trials, but rather in the context of a film shoot, attempting to pull off the most outrageous stunts possible at the whim of the movie director.

It’s been a while, but five years later, here we are with game’s long-awaited sequel, Stuntman: Ignition, as announced today by THQ. The series, though no longer in the hands of the Atari/Reflections (and we’d guess much less in the vain of Driver as a result), has landed in the hands of THQ’s internal studio Paradigm Entertainment, who will be whipping up another batch of adrenaline-fueled, gravity-defying, death-defying car action for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.

"Stuntman: Ignition will provide hours of addictive, edge-of-your-seat driving for action and racing fans alike," chirps Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ. "The game brings a unique approach to the genre, encouraging gamers to perfect their racing technique while creating their own personalized Hollywood stuntman experience."

Players will be back in the driver seat of an on-set stunt driver, with over 25 unique vehicles at their disposal (from exotic sports cars to motorcycles to, hey, hovercraft!) to pilot through the most heart-stirring stunts imaginable. When not pulling a 9-5 on the set of big-budget action flicks, commercials, and “tournaments,” gamers can also take their game online, battling it out with rival stuntmen on film sets and back-lot areans, or even build their very own stunt runs from scratch and challenge others to jump through the proverbial hoops of fire. But seriously, there might be fiery hoops.

"Stuntman: Ignition delivers an addictive blend of death-defying stunts and precision-based driving unlike anything seen before," grins Dave Gatchel, General Manager, Paradigm Studios. "With an action-packed career mode and intense online multiplayer, gamers will have plenty to prove to become Hollywood's next big stuntman."

The action heats up this summer. Now tell us that's not a horribly clichéd tagline! Expect a few follow-up details and some tasty, tasty media before then.
