Capcom Kills Street Fighter IV Momentum With Movie Plans

The cast list alone is worthy of a palm to face picture.

If you're Capcom, what do you do when riding off the success of some of the greatest titles known to man? Make a live action movie, of course!

Street Fighter returns for the 20th anniversary of the franchise as a live action movie starring Kristin Kreuk as the protagonist Chun-Li. Balrog, played by Michael Clark Duncan, M. Bison, played by Neal McDonough, and Vega, played by Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas, also round out the cast, as well as Chris Klein, who plays Charlie, Guile's much abused counterpart.

With the excitement over Street Fighter IV rising to a fevered pitch, it only makes sense to make another video game film, especially knowing how little entertainment value the movies offer in comparison to the video game title. Thankfully, Hyde Park Films and 20th Century Fox know nothing of this, so the Street Fighter movie will see a worldwide release in 2009.

And if you're wondering why Street Fighter is all over the place lately, then you've been living in a cave for the last 20 years. Not only was it one of the most played video games in the '90s, it was the fighting game that every other fighting game tailored itself after. In fact, games such as Tekken and Virtua Fighter are popular today because they followed the framework that Street Fighter II set, including storyline elements and character development.

In the late '90s and early '00s, the franchise had lost its way a bit, but Capcom is hoping that Street Fighter IV can return it to the throne it once occupied in fighting game fans' minds. It's too bad they also decided to make a movie alongside it.
