Payback, Soldier of Fortune-Style

Activision's ultra-gory first-person shooter is reborn on next-gen with a new developer but that same ol' spatter.

Though console-only gamers will likely not recall the original Soldier of Fortune with the same kind of dreamy expression (if they even remember or know about the game at all), but for those that blasted their way through Raven Software's bloody FPS (sporting then-unseen levels of gore with their GHOUL Engine that let you actually blast off individual body parts, leaving bloody stumps in their place), it coupled a messing single-player experience with some terrific online multiplayer.

And now, finally, the game is getting a proper sequel, though, surprisingly, Raven isn't handling it (even weirder considering Raven's close relationship with Activision with their Marvel beat-em-ups). Instead, Slovakian developer Cauldron will be helming the title, though apparently the game will still sport the same level of destruction and plenty of multiplayer options as well.

The usual Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Elimination modes with Team variants are here, as well as Demolition, all with maps taken from single-player and tweaked for multiplayer (as we'd hope they would be). No online game these days worth its salt would leave on online stat tracking (and, we're hoping, progressive unlocks and ranks too). Little beyond the fact that you'll jump into the shoes of Thomas Mason, a gun-for-hire who ends up over his head on a mercenary mission, has been revealed about the single-player.

Even with the little info that we've got, Activision was nice enough to kick over a trailer and screenshots, so by all means, scroll up and give 'em a little clicky-clicky. We'll have more as soon as we get it.
