SingStar Soaring Into the Stratosphere

Lots of downloading, lots of singing, lots of crazy Superman dances.

Twelve million singing fools can't be wrong. Or, maybe they can and they just don't know it? Not like it matters to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, since the SingStar series has sold over 12 million units across PAL territories since its release. Five million of that was in Fiscal Year 2007 alone, which started April of 2007 and ended March of 2008.

SingStar started life on the PlayStation 2 in 2004. Capitalizing on the music game revolution, it was yet another entry in a long running tradition of fascinating social experiments on video game consoles. December 2007 saw the release of the PlayStation 3 version of the game, with some substantial changes, not the least of which included downloadable content via the SingStore. It also introduced online features like My SingStar Online, where fans can share recorded performances with the entire SingStar community.

Because of the new additions, SingStar's SingStore has been a huge hit and people have gone nuts over My SingStar Online. One million downloads sucked down bandwith across PAL territories in the first four months of SingStore's release and My SingStar Online has 140,000 registered users who have shared more than 20,000 videos.

“The term ‘social gaming’ is widely recognised in 2008 – however, it was relatively new when we launched the first SingStar title in 2004,” Mark Handy, Director of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said. “That game entered the charts at number one in many countries, allowing us to pioneer the social gaming category and a new market of consumers who might not have bought games before. We really are teaching the world to sing with SingStar – and business for 2008 is looking excellent.”

Social gaming has become a force to be reckoned with, most notably in the music game genre. SingStar has always been at the forefront of that movement, especially with its many themed releases. From the '80s to the '90s and from Rock to Pop, SingStar fans have always had an exceptional catalog to access.

With the brand taking home several Guinness World Records (Most Successful Singing Game, First Customizable Track in a Singing Game, and First Music Game to Let Players Record Their Performances and Share them Online), it's only a matter of time before SingStar becomes synonymous with fun... oh, wait, it already has. Throw one back for the company. They deserve all the success. Cheers, Sony!
