Insomniac Shares the Luv
The house that Spyro built offers some serious development community support.

Insomniac Games is in a rather enviable position. They not only shipped the first million-selling game on the PlayStation 3, the damned fine launch shooter Resistance: Fall of Man, but they're hard at work on the first second-gen game on the system in the form of Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (which we'll have a proper update on in just a few weeks, so check back then). The developer's command of the PS3 hardware is impressive, but what's even more awesome is the fact that they're willingly giving up some of the experience they've gleaned from working on the system on their website for developers and those curious about how games are made on the system alike.
"The 'R&D' page on the Insomniac website is meant to share knowledge with fellow studios about PS3 development while giving our fans a detailed look into how we make our games. This page will also help explain our production philosophies," explains Insomniac CEO/founder Ted Price.
As the good Mr. Price said, the R&D section of Insomniac's official site goes into plenty of detail on how the developer is learning to coax some super sexy visuals out of the various parts of Cell and the RSX graphics chip. Not only is it interesting to see exactly how the developer goes about things, it may actually end up being a strong tool for newcomers to the system or 3rd party devs that have quickly found that just doing a 1:1 port of an existing next-gen project is far more complicated than first thought.
It's yet another example of how in tune with the dev community Insomniac strives to be -- a fact that's made perfectly clear when you listen to their weekly podcast, The Full Moon Show. This week they sat down with Factor 5 (yes, of Lair fame) to discuss a handful of topics centering around programming... and they didn't mind discussing some early reviews of Lair either.
So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Insomniac's site, check out the new section, give the podcasts a listen and tell 'em TotalPlayStation sentcha!
