Midway Rolls Out Six

The PlayStation Network, with the help of Sony Online Entertainment, gets a healthy dose of Midway classics.

You’ve got to hand it to Sony Online Entertainment. They’ve been the first to go all-out in disturbing titles solely intended for download on the PS3’s up-and-coming PlayStation Network, and looks as though they won’t be lightening up anytime soon. The online gaming leader gave word today that it has licensed the rights from Midway to six of their arcade classics, to be both distributed and developed by SOE.

Mortal Kombat II, Gauntlet II, Joust, Rampage World Tour, Rampart and Championship Sprint, chosen specifically for their multiplayer capabilities, will all be seeing the light of day on the PlayStation Network, with the first game to be available for download in early 2007 (late this month, we’d say).

“We knew these titles would be a perfect fit for the PlayStation Network, and based on Sony Online Entertainment’s legacy in the online space as well as their intimate knowledge of the PlayStation Network, it was an obvious decision they would be a top company to work with to bring this project to fruition,” expounded Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway.

“This is a great opportunity for SOE and Midway to come together to bring these arcade treasures to the next-generation of gaming on the PlayStation 3,” assured John Needham, Sr. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Sony Online Entertainment. “SOE will continue to explore additional opportunities to bring fun and unique digital content to the PlayStation Network.”

While prices and technically release dates have yet to be set for the half dozen, do keep an eye out for them while surfing through the service. The first of many collections to come, so we hope.
