NBA Live 07 Nets Five Cover Men

Different regions mean NBA players will grace this year's covers.

Americans tend to think of basketball as a fairly exclusive American sport -- sort of like football. Thing is, it's rather popular in other countries, and it would make sense that EA would adopt an approach similar to what they've been doing with the FIFA series for a few years now. That is, slapping multiple cover athletes on different international releases of the same game, which works out rather nicely considering some of the countries the cover athletes hail from.

This year, the Houston Rockets’ Tracy McGrady will rock the American version of NBA Live 07, the Dallas Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki reps the German release, while the San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker and Phoenix Suns’ Boris Diaw will share the French cover and Memphis Grizzlies’ Pau Gasol's mug will be found on the Spanish boxes.

It's all part of EA's attempt to rope in a little more of the European market, see, and to this end they've included an in-game option to play as Nowitzki, Parker, Gasol, Diaw, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Peja Stojakovic, Andrei Kirilenko, Mehmet Okur, Hedo Turkoglu, Vladimir Radmanovic, Andrea Bargnani, Mickael Pietrus, Sasha Vujacic, Beno Udrih and Nenad Krstic, better known as the European All-Star team, complete with special jerseys.

As an extra little bit of oomph, EA is conducting Euro versions of the EA Sports NBA Live Challenge (yes, it's the basketball version of the Madden Challenge), and they'll be spearheading a handful of training camp sessions with the Spurs, Suns, Clippers and 76ers dubbed "NBA Europe Live presented by EA Sports." Yes, it's a wonderfully short title. The NBA/EA/Euroleague Basketball events are designed to draw a little more awareness to Euro roundball -- and we're guessing EA's probably hoping it'll sell a few games.

Fortunately for them, NBA Live 07 hits just about every console out there right now -- including our fantabulous PlayStation 3 when it launches in November. Of course all the other versions will go on sale at the end of next month, but that doesn't mean you can't hold out a little. The PS3 version will (we're hoping) give you access to the same beefed up AI, All-Star Weekend games, Dynasty Mode and fancy new Total Freestyle Control improvements... you'll just have to wait a little longer to get 'em. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right? Right?
