Gundam Go for PS3
Well this certainly wasn't a surprise, but hey, confirmation.

When Sony rolled out a montage of now-questionably-presented games at E3 2005, one of the games showed briefly was a new Gundam offering dubbed simply Mobile Suit Gundam. It wasn't overtly impressive, but it did pack a nice bit of punch visually, showing towering, thundering mega-ton mechs (sorry, Mobile Suits) squaring off in a sun-drenched, rubble filled husk of a downtown city. It was enough to get Gundam freaks all jazzed, but the game didn't show up again until E3 this year. In playable form.
The comparisons between the original CG teaser and the actual game were going to be impossible to ignore, and though the general reception at E3 wasn't overwhelmingly positive, Namco Bandai apparently feels the PlayStation 3 launch window would be sorely lacking without some big, huge bots blowing each other up. As we both support and encourage the mindless destruction of futuristic machines (anything to stave off Judgment Day, you see), we're cautiously optimistic about things. The Bandai wing of the merged Japanese superpublisher is anything but cautious, however.
“Made possible by the immense power of the PlayStation 3 system, Mobile Suit Gundam will take gamers right into the futuristic war zones, brought to life by both CG quality high-definition graphics and ultra realistic destruction physics,” beamed Naruo Uchida, Namco Bandai Games America's Vice President. “Along with stylized gameplay and stunning graphics, the opportunity to experience firsthand the epic mobile suit warfare will surely excite any sci-fi fan.”
Set in the late One Year War era, MSG concerns itself with some light strategy in concert with leading a full battalion of Mobile Suits into conflict as either the Federation or Zeon Mobile Assault Force. The strategy comes from learning and exploiting the weak points of each Mobile Suit, since just firing blindly will end up feeling like a pea shooting match, apparently. It's an interesting concept, and if pulled off well, could make for an interesting counterpoint to the more arcadey Gundam games of the past.
Take a peek at seven new images to the left there, rendered in loving 1080p, to see how things stack up against the original renders. Better? Worse? Feel free to discuss it [forums]in the forums[/forums], but remember, the game is slated for release this year, making for a fairly short window between the PS3's November 17th launch and the end of the year. Should be interesting to see how it shapes up.
