Mercenaries 2 to Inflame Multiple Consoles

Guess what next-gen sandbox game is no longer PS3-exclusive?

One couldn’t help pick up on the inkling that this would be the fate of Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, Pandemic’s heated open-world action title, soon after the studio got all cozy-like with newfound publisher Electronic Arts. After all, EA has always been about the multiple SKUs, and if turning out several versions of a game on varying consoles means turning out a decent profit for the boys in the development department, the opportunity becomes hard not to accept.

But today brings the official word, with EA and Pandemic announcing that Mercenaries 2 has indeed lost its PlayStation 3 exclusive and instead will be making its additional rounds on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and PC a simultaneous holiday 2007 release.

Surely someone’s happy about the news.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames delivers the next evolution in explosive open world gameplay – regardless of the system you play it on,” asserts Pandemic Studios CEO Andrew Goldman. “All four platforms are incredible gaming machines, and from the beginning we designed an experience that accentuates their individual strengths and delivers the interactive freedom and explosive action Mercenaries fans demand.”

“EA Partners is proud to team up with Pandemic Studios to help execute a seamless, simultaneous global release for Mercenaries 2: World in Flames on four platforms,” adds EA Partners vice president and general manager, David DeMartini. “The team at Pandemic Studios is building an incredible game that will blow away gamers in all regions of the world.”

Seeing as the original game made nice with both Sony and Microsoft upon its release, the reality of a multi-console successor isn’t terribly out of the question. We’ll keep you posted as more develops, but be sure to get the lowdown on Mercenaries 2 from our initial preview circa E3 2006.
