Jeep Creeping into Medal of Honor

Makes sense, right? Jeeps did get their general purpose micromoniker in WWII.

Fun fact: The Jeep as we know it today, a proud product of one DaimlerChrysler company, actually got its start in World War II as a convergence between Willys-Overland (Overland Edition Jeeps are still sold today) and Ford. But, those days of troop transport and all-terrain hauling of goods through bombed-out streets and over otherwise impossible terrain are long behind us.

Not for EA and their LA development studio, though. No no, they're more than happy to kick down a few bucks to Daddy DaimlerChrysler to use the original Jeep design that was used so prominently in The Big One. According to EA's factoids, some 350,000 of the suckers were pumped out during the war, and it's likely they were a linchpin to the Allies' success in moving things across some of the more formidable landscape of Europe. And now you'll see it in Medal of Honor Airborne.

So how does a game with Airborne in the title actually involve the Jeep? Silly gamer person, the missions only start in the air. Most will finish in the thick of it down on the good ol' terra firma, and this is where having an officially licensed replica of the proper vehicle comes in (and yes, your guess is as good as ours as to why the license had to be picked up now after so many WWII games had already featured Jeeps or Jeep-a-likes).

"Video games are quickly becoming the medium of choice for a new generation of consumers and Chrysler Group has been at the forefront of this exciting revolution," grinned Jay Kuhnie, Director - Jeep Communications, Chrysler Group. "By teaming with Electronic Arts and Medal of Honor Airborne, Jeep is celebrating its history while helping to take this medium to its next level."

Shortly thereafter he was heard going "cha-chinnnnng, cha-chinnnng" under his breath.

“The Medal of Honor Airborne experience begins with unprecedented freedom of approach from the air. With the addition of the Willys Jeep, that freedom continues on the ground, on road and off, and in combat scenarios of all types." explained EALA VP and Executive Producer Patrick Gilmore. “This is the first time in any Medal of Honor game that a player will have the ability to drive a Willys Jeep, and we’re very excited to see this new addition increase the fun and intensity of the gameplay.”

The deal between EA and Jeep means more than just having a Jeep as a prop, though; the obvious focus on the vehicle means extended sequences will milk that license for all it's worth (our money's on some kind of rail shooting level, cause there has to be one of those in every WWII game or someone gets fined). Of course, once we know the particulars of the vehicle's use in the game, we'll make sure we update you kind folks.
