For a war that ended well over a half-century ago, Electronic Arts has certainly had no problem milking the most of it with its Medal of Honor series, now in its seventh year and running. With the latest addition to the series, announced today as Medal of Honor Airborne, EA is striving to redefine the WWII-based first person shooter with the inclusion of a fully-interactive airdrop experience. Here’s another little asset that might distinguish this Medal of Honor game from its predecessors: it’s coming to the PlayStation 3.

Medal of Honor Airborne is a step in a new direction for the franchise. While integrating our state-of-the-art, next-gen technology into every aspect of the game, we are introducing innovations that will redefine the series and impact the genre as a whole," explained Patrick Gilmore, VP and Executive Producer at EALA. “By fully controlling the airdrop from your very first step through landing, Medal of Honor Airborne adds a new dimension of player choice by letting you decide where every mission begins and how it plays out.”

The claim to fame this time around is the airborne experience, allowing for players to scope out the terrain from above before ‘chuting to a the landing spot of their choice and taking to the action, in free-roaming FPS form (rife with photo-realistic characters, we’re told). Players take the role of Boyd Travers, Private First Class of the 82nd Airborne Division to battle out over the several countries involves in the Second World War, with a selection of authentic and customizable weapons available to get the job done. EA has once again recruited Capt. Dale Dye as “Military Technical Advisor” (it’s an official title, folks) to ensure the game keeps in check with history.

Spanning both current and next-generation consoles, Medal of Honor Airborne is set to drop in this winter. We’re about as desperate as you are for follow-up details.
