Sony’s Guerilla Tactics

Killzone developers are now a part of the Sony Collective.

In the Great Console Wars of 2006, companies will not be destroyed, they will be absorbed. Or something. Actually, it’s a deal that almost anyone could see coming for a while now, and there were rumors that it would happen. What most simply acknowledged with a simple “yeah, probably” has finally come to pass: Sony has acquired Guerilla Games, and will be folding them into the greater Sony Computer Entertainment Europe header.

Of all the videos Sony showed off at the E3 press conference last may, the Killzone trailer sparked the most heated debate over whether it was actually indicative of what we’d see on the PlayStation 3. We’re still wondering, to be honest, but the question of it being real-time or not is clear: it’s not. Of course, now that the developer is in-house at Sony, there’s a chance that we could finally be seeing something close to that concept video.

Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, lavished plenty of praise on the Amsterdam-based developers, gushing, ”Guerrilla have a great combination of creative, technical and production talent in their team and we have enjoyed a close working relationship with their management and staff for a number of years. I am delighted that they will now become a member of the SCE Worldwide Studios network of developers. As we prepare for the launch of PLAYSTATION 3 next year, this acquisition strengthens our development portfolio to take full advantage of the exciting entertainment opportunities provided by PSP, PLAYSTATION 3 and beyond.” We only wish we’d put PS3 in all-caps like that.

Hermen Hulst, Guerilla’s Managing Director reciprocated, offering, "Sony Computer Entertainment - with its truly global presence, leading platforms and commitment to innovation – is an ideal partner for Guerrilla and we are delighted to take our existing relationship to the next level."

Kind words all around, but then that’s to be expec—waaaaitaminit... PSP? Indeedy, Guerilla is working on a Killzone game – or as Sony’s official line describes it “a further game within the Killzone universe.” The first game may not have been the much-vaunted “Halo killer” that some of the Euro press decided to decorate the title with before it was finished, but it certainly was entertaining, and doubtlessly the best game that Guerilla has made thus far.

Needless to say, we’ll be watching for any new news, but now that the company has been swallowed up, don’t expect much beyond the official company line. As soon as that comes down the wire, we’ll make sure to let you know. Yes, you.
