[E3 2006] Free Radical Pushes Through the Haze

The minds behind first-person shooters like TimeSplitters are working on...

Oh, hey, a first-person shooter! We haven't seen an awful lot of those already--waaaaitaminit, this is something from Free Radical Design, the cats that worked at Rare during the GoldenEye days but left to form their own company. Didn't they make one of the prettiest and smoothest-running PS2 launch games right out of the gate? And they're working with Ubisoft now as a publisher rather than EA or Eidos? Yeah, okay, we're interested.

"We are really pleased to be introducing this groundbreaking new intellectual property and to work with the best shooter developers on consoles," beamed Tony Key, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft North America. "With HAZE, Ubisoft demonstrates its profound commitment to the next generation of video games and will definitely have a chance to deliver a top-notch shooter in one stunning package."

While details are still fairly slim (hey, they have to save something for the months leading up to the game's "early 2007" release), we're already salivating over the game's promise of visuals and animation that Free Radical seems to have nailed from the start, but there's plenty to look forward to in the way of futuristic weapons (the game takes place 25 or so years in the future), enhanced enemy AI and detailed physics, as well as online multiplayer. Mmmm... Sony Network Platform multiplayer...

The storyline as it stands now is little more than a teaser; Jake Carpenter enlists with the Mantel corporation, a privately funded army-for-hire that, thanks to state-of-the-art weapons and vehicles, is feared by anyone at the end of the soldiers' collective sights -- be they terrorists or just someone that Mantel doesn't like. Carpenter is deployed to South America, but what starts out as a young man with some new high-powered toys slowly starts to turn sour, and Jake finds there's much, much more to the machinations of Mantel than just government-mandated military operations.

Trust us, we're all about getting the deets on this one, and as soon as we can get more info, we'll pass it along.
