Golden Axe is Back!

Well, now we know what Secret Level has been up to.

Ever since we heard the news that SEGA had scooped up developer Secret Level a few weeks back, we were curious what their first collaborative project would be. Now that Secret Level was allowed into the sanctum sanctorum of the house that Sonic built, it would be very interesting indeed to find out which one of SEGA's classic franchises would fall under the crafting hands of the SF-based developer.

Now, we need not wonder any more. That project is Golden Axe, and from the sound of the always quote-worthy Scott A. Steinberg, the game is going to be more than just a remake of the classic (and might we add bad-effing-ass arcade beat-em-up).

"Golden Axe is one of our most treasured brands and is a complete re-imagining of the story that will take gamers on an unforgettable journey," SEGA's VP of Marketing claims. "The vision we have for the remake of Golden Axe is nothing short of remarkable and it can only be realized on the PLAYSTATION 3 system and Xbox 360."

So there. It's only possible on next-gen systems, whatever the hell that is. Right now, all we can tell you is that the game is no longer a straight side-scrolling button masher. You can still ride on mounts of fantastic origin, and you can still wield magic, but the types of characters, the actual presentation of the game and whether or not you can still beat the hell out of little magic-stealing imps in the dead of night while they let out cute little squeals is still something that needs to be ironed out.

Since the game won't be shown at E3 this year (at least not publically, though we'll find out later today if it's being shown behind closed doors, which is entirely possible given how long the game has been under way), we'll have to wait until SEGA gives us more news and the okay to post it. As soon as we get both, you'll know.
