Fantastic Four For Your Playtastic Three

Let’s hope this doesn’t turn into the –astic route most movie games go: Craptastic.

Most movie games end up in console history being the crap of the crap. They either: 1. Try to emulate the movie too much or too little, 2. Don’t give you enough options to mess around with because of the creative license, or both. We are sure everyone has at least bought two titles of this type and have destroyed them in their favorite fashion. Well here comes another one of ‘em and lets hope they get the formula right.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is the second Fantastic 4 title released for Sony consoles. The first one didn’t do to well with its shoddy gameplay and lackluster presentation, so 2K is hoping to improve on this second title just like the big screen sequel improved over its terrible first outing. Available for both the PS3 and the PS2 (though the latter version was developed by the original game's dev house, 7 Studios), players are able to combat the Silver Surfer and the enigmatic force which always follows him when he arrives on a planet (if you know Silver Surfer lore, then you know what we are talking about). In addition, 2K added a few new tweaks to help this game be more enjoyable.

Taking from other comic movie titles, Rise of the Silver Surfer adds in bosses from the actual comic universe that you probably won’t see in the movie. Super Skrull, Terrax, Red Ghost are some of the baddies you get to thrash around giving the game a bit more bulk. It would kinda suck it if was only Silver Surfer. Actually dispatching these villains is what 2K is emphasizing.

We’ve all seen the trailers in which each FF member is using one of the others powers. Fantastic Four: RotSS uses this theme as one of it’s features by letting you do “Fusion Attacks” -- tag-team moves that let one team member use or combine their powers with their partners'.

"The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer video game capitalizes on the capabilities of next generation platforms to bring fun new features to the franchise, such as seamless four player co-op and the radically unique Fusion Attacks," gloats 2K President Christoph Hartmann.

“With Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, 2K is giving fans of the comic book series and movie franchise a great opportunity to continue the exciting Super Hero experience,” adds Justin Lambros, Marvel Entertainment's VP of Interactive. “Gamers can relive the best moments from the film and also play through additional storylines exclusive to the game.”

Hmm let’s think this through. Invisible Fire! Rock Hard Stretchyness!... omit the last thought or we might end up giving this game an AO rating. Superhero movie game or not, it’s out. Let’s just hope the game isn’t a superzero.
