PlayStation 3 Feels F.E.A.R.

And only one generation after the Emotion Engine!

Well, it looks like we'd better start printing all these rumors little birds tell us. Though it was hardly a well-kept secret, we'd heard through the grapevine a few days ago that there was an impending release of Monolith Productions' incredibly cool supernatural first-person shooter, F.E.A.R. on PlayStation 3. What we weren't told was that it would be a PS3 launch game (meaning you'll have it in as little as 91 days from today), and that it was being done by Day 1 Studios. The ink is barely dry on Day 1's deal with LucasArts for an original IP, but when Day 1 says they're diving into multi-platform next-gen development, apparently they do it whole hog.


To be fair, Day 1 also handled the conversion of First Encounter Asssault Recon (yes, that's why the abbreviate it, it's much less... odd as an acronym) for the Xbox 360, and though this will be the first PlayStation 3 game the developer puts out, it's something bigger: the first test of a formerly PC-only game that's been ported to decidedly un-PC-like conditions; the PS3 has no DirectX like the 360, instead relying on OpenGL, but it does have nVidia's fairly familiar Cg graphics language and programmable shaders, so we'll see how a game normally used to residing in a PC environment does in the comparatively alien world of the Cell processor.

And really, that's about all we know. The PS3 version of F.E.A.R. will actually offer exclusive single-player bits, and multi-player (which we can only assume will be part of the PlayStation Network Platform) as a part of the PC-to-PlayStation transition. The extra weight should help push some early adopters that haven't yet had their pants soiled by the PC version off the fence and into snapping the game up as a launch title purchase. Of course, the real test will be to see how the game runs, and we'll be sure to let you know exactly how well that is as soon as we can.
