Capcom Crosses Over

Why Sony execs, and the Devil, are crying over Capcom's latest announcement.

Well, even though all of the cool kids seem to be dropping exlusivity in favor of more mone-- er, installed users, everyone was pretty shocked when Capcom announced yesterday that Devil May Cry 4 would be going multiplatform. Previously a PS3 exlusive, it appears Capcom has been hard at work developing DMC4 for the Xbox 360 for quite some time -- the game will launch for both systems on the same date. A later release is planned for PC users. Although multiplatform games are sometimes criticized for less than desirable performance issues, Capcom assures us that "each version of the game will be maximized to take advantage of the systems’ strengths, leading to a breath-taking visual and gameplay experience".

This is just the latest in a string of exclusivity losses suffered by Sony, including Assassin's Creed, Virtua Fighter 5, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Mercenaries 2 -- clearly, this is the last thing Sony needs as it tries to lure gamers to the system after some less than favorable PR. Explaining the decision to abandon Sony, Mark Beaumont (one of the head honchos over at Capcom) said that "Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal...this announcement means that PS3, Xbox 360 and PC owners worldwide will be able to experience the latest installment of one of Capcom’s pillar franchises". You don't speak PR? Let me help you out with that: "more money".
