Those Digital Extremes guys are awfully well-known, even if you don’t know you know them. As the creative partners with Epic Games on the entire freakin’ Unreal franchise, they’ve been pumping out addictive multiplayer-friendly first-person shooters for years now... well, on the PC – the PS2/DreamCast/Xbox versions haven’t been received quite so warmly.

Like many PC-heavy developers, though, they’re plying their experience with programmable shaders and whiz-bang graphics effects on most high-end PC cards towards the next generation of consoles, which all feature graphics chips lifted from PCs. Those familiar with their trademarked high-tech intricacies and character detail no doubt got a rush after seeing the first footage of Dark Sector, which looks promising to say the least.

This is all in stark contrast to D3Publisher, who, uh, nooobody’s heard of before – and no, you haven’t heard of their games either unless you’re some kind of Cabbage Patch/Naruto/Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi freak. Then again, who isn’t an AmiYumi freak? Still, that hasn’t stopped the two from inking a deal to get Dark Sector thrown onto PCs and next-gen systems everywhere.

“We are very fortunate based on our previous successes to be in a position of being selective with our business partners,” outlines James Schmalz, Digital Extremes founder. “D3Publisher of America impressed us with their commitment to publishing high quality next-generation games that exceed gamers’ expectations, which we certainly expect to do with Dark Sector. We consider this game to be the culmination of the experience we have garnered over the years in creating cutting-edge entertainment and we are pleased to be working with them to bring Dark Sector to gamers around the world.”

“Our focus at D3Publisher of America continues to be acquiring good, mass-market appeal licensed properties, and the acquisition of IP from selected developers designed for next generation machines,” returned Yoji Takenaka, Executive VP/COO of D3PA. “The opportunity to work with the world renowned design team that James Schmalz has assembled at Digital Extremes is just too good to pass up. They have an outstanding reputation for gorgeous graphics, polished gameplay and high quality production values. We are very proud to be working with them on Dark Sector.”

And there you have it, folks. Dark Sector has a publisher and both parties seem to love each other. Hopefully this means we’ll be getting more info on the game soon. When we do, you’ll be the first to know.
