[Pre-GC 2007] Buzz! Goes Next-Gen

The PS2 one isn't even out here in the US yet, but that's not stopping Sony from prepping a PS3 version of their bazillion-selling quiz show.

Though we recently were talked up by Sony Computer Entertainment America PR folks about SingStar and all the community aspects it would be bringing to the PS3, we never once bothered to think about the other game they were showing off during their big Lollapalooza event in Chicago: Buzz. Oh, we thought about it (and Sony event demoed the US version of the game for the first time), but we didn't really put two and two together.

Luckily, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe went ahead and did it for us -- and the result is a nice little slap in the face to Microsoft and their SceneIt offering. Why? Three words: user-generated content. Okay, that's like one hyphenated word and another word, but it's kinda three words and besides, it's not the point. The point is, while Microsoft was busy readying a quiz show offering of their own, Sony was apparently taking all the PS2 content and injecting it with a bunch of the "Game 3.0" malarkey juju. The result is a quiz show game that may never run out of content.

Now it's probably safe to say that Sony will stagger the release of the game here in the States a little so as not to completely overshadow the 5,000 questions in the PS2 version that they're just now putting the final touches on. That's fine, we'll just chalk this up as yet another Leipzig announcement that has us sighing heavily as we watch the European audience get it. Buzz! Quiz TV will ship on Blu-ray with 5,000 new questions, fancy shmancy new HD visuals -- including new contestant characters to choose from, plus new commentary from the host(s).

The real draw, however, is the fact that PS3 owners will be able to make up their own questions and submit them (or vote for others, just like SingStar), effectively creating an unlimited number of questions. Look, we can already see the gears turning, and no, we doubt you'll be able to make a question like "how huge is my wang?" with all the answers being "so huge," but it still offers a nice amount of replayability.

Of course user-generated content isn't going to be the sole source of post-release content; SCEE and developer Relentless will be adding content packs to the PlayStation Store, and downloading these can give you a number of options on how you play the extra content, including playing the most recent pack, including the new content in a custom channel of your choice, a quiz hopper (essentially the main game with the new content) and of course you're still welcome to play with others online. Oh, did we forget that part? Whoops.

If/when the game actually ends up heading to the States, we'll make sure to update things.
