[Pre-E3 2006] Welcome to Hell…’s Highway

The Brothers In Arms are marching into next-gen territory. It’s hell out there, people!

If you’ve kept a keen ear to the (games) media these past few days -- particularly the next-gen happenings -- you’ve likely seen Ubisoft’s name pop up more than once. After some swirling speculation that cited an upcoming issue of Game Informer, the company finally came clean with confirmation of a work-in-progesss for Nintendo’s Revolution (that game would be Red Steel).

With the proverbial ball now rolling, Ubisoft has gone ahead and spilled the beans on another of its next generation projects, one you may be a little more familiar with. From the Texan developer Gearbox comes the third entry in its squad-based WWII shooter, Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway. And yes, for once we do know for certain it’s headed to the PlayStation 3.

Ok, ok, so you’ve relived this timeless conflict dozens of times before, but we swear, this time, it’ll be totally different. Look, your objective even has a catchy name to it: Operation Market-Garden. For starters, it’s the war’s largest airborne operation, and as the 101st Airborne Division, you (ok, so Matt Baker, Joe Hartsock and all those other guys too) will have make an audacious attempt to put a quick end to the ongoing bloodshed. Ludicrous? Quite possibly. After all, they don’t call it “Hell’s Highway” for nuthin’.

"With Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway, Gearbox is investing everything to take next-generation gaming to an entirely new level," proclaimed Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. "For Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway, the Unreal Engine 3 powers real next-generation graphics and the most intense, action-oriented recreation of true history ever offered as interactive entertainment."

Yep, Gearbox has also hopped on the Unreal Engine bandwagon, but assuming it makes for some spectacular eye candy, we’re all for it. The audio department should be just as outstanding, so we’re told, with plenty of gameplay innovations to go around too, not of the least is an online component that’s been redesigned from the ground up.

The concept is yet to get the stamp of approval from Sony Computer Entertainment America, but assuming that minor detail goes through, Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway will be bringing the fight to next generation consoles this holiday season. If this is the first of several pre-E3 PS3 confirmations to come, you’d better believe we’ll be back with the details. At ease, soldier!
