[Pre-E3 2006] When One is Not Enough
...it takes an Army of Two. EA will second us on that one.
Published: May 2, 2006
The action games we've come to know and love have always stressed the single-player experience. There's just something undeniably ballsy about taking down an entire terrorist organization or rival army on your own. Absurdly unrealistic? Undoubtedly, but hell if we haven't had a good time doing it.
To make such testosterone-driven heroics seem a tad more plausible, Electronic Arts is looking to show that if you can't win the war solo... then do it with a partner!
“Army of Two is a first for EA in many ways," admits Alain Tascan, VP and General Manager of EA Montréal, who has been serving as Executive Producer on the title. "This is the first EA studio to be built entirely from the ground-up. This is EA’s first original title for the next-gen systems. Army of Two is the first game to put players inside tactical warfare involving Private Military Corporations.”
We can't tell you how many times we read "TWO" in the press release, but indeed, Army of Two is all about fighting the good fight cooperatively. The plot is said to stream across current-day news headlines, in a war so unsettled by political turmoil and conspiracy, the entire world is at risk. Gamers will have to put two-man tactics to good use, with seamless transitioning between a live player and an intelligent Partner AI (PAI).
“This is the game we’ve always wanted to create," beams Reid Schneider, Senior Producer at EA Montréal. "Until now, the hardware would not allow us to deliver truly intelligent AI characters. We’ve built this game with co-operative TWO man gameplay as the centerpiece of the experience. Whether you’re playing with PAI or a friend, it’s about the TWO man missions, TWO man strategies and the TWO man advantage that really sets this game apart.”
Perhaps it's no surprise that the game will be released on TWO next-gen systems in 2007, both the forthcoming PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Once E3 2006 kicks off, we'll be sure to bring back a detail or TWO! Ok, we'll stop.
