D3 Caught in a Hail of 100 Bullets

The comic license lives on after Acclaim's demise.

Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's 100 Bullets DC comic has let a tumultuous life on the way to becoming a video game property. Originally snapped up by Acclaim, it was to be one of the company's big turnaround games that would finally break the string of bad releases and move them back into being a solid publisher again. Alas, the company folded before the game could ever be finished by their internal Austin studio, and most wondered if the property would get snapped up during the fire sale of the company's assets.

As it turns out, something happened to the license -- either it lapsed or it was picked up -- but the result is the game: D3Publisher will be bringing the game to current-gen (and we're guessing PS3 too) consoles and handhelds next year. The time table would lead one to believe this isn't a continuation of the work that Acclaim Studios Austin put into the game, but then we've come a long way since 2004 in technology, and a restart isn't out of the question.

The game itself is still a fairly big question mark, but that won't stop just about every head cheese involved in the licensing project from talking a little about it with typical exclamations of glee. Observe:

"100 Bullets has all the elements necessary to translate exceptionally well into video games," explains Careen Yapp, vice president of licensing and business development of D3PA. "We look forward to bringing the unique characters and storyline of 100 Bullets to life with the latest interactive technology and graphics and will work closely with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics/Vertigo to maintain the authenticity consumers demand."

"Taking the thrilling story elements and incredible action from the 100 Bullets comic series and incorporating explosive gameplay will make an exciting game for fans and gamers," added Scott Johnson, vice president of business development for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "Working with D3PA and DC Comics/Vertigo, we will utilize the source material to give players the authentic feel they are looking for."

"100 Bullets is an innovative crime-noir series that combines powerful story telling with non-stop action, and will be a great addition to the gaming world," thirded John Nee, vice president of business development for DC Comics. "We look forward to working with both D3PA and Warner Interactive Entertainment on this exciting new project."

Stick around for more updates as we move toward's the game's release in many moons.
