X-Men Take a Stand
And with licensing rights through 2017, why wouldn't Activision be cranking out a movie-based game for X-Men: The Last Stand?
Published: February 6, 2006
Nary a year will go by when Activision won't have us manning the role of a high-flying webslinger or an assorted team of superheroes. In theory, at least. With the X-Men series soon to become a film trilogy, though, 2006 will indeed be one of those years. The film is called X-Men: The Last Stand, but the game rocks the far more (though thankfully tentative) wordy, far less impacting title of X-Men: The Official Movie Game.
Lame name aside, the latest superhero adventure throws players into much more commanding, action-oriented gameplay as the trio of Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Iceman. As with any reasonable mutli-character scheme, attacks and techniques will be unique to each hero: Wolverine hacks 'n' slashes, Nightcrawler gracefully evades and climbs, while Iceman is all about speed and, uh, ice. That said, all three can have their signature powers upgraded over the course of the game, which will be an expanded version of the X-Men movie universe.
Speaking of its film ties, X-Men: The Official Movie Game (boy, does that get tiring) will offer plot events that both precede and succeed those of the movie. Wondering why Nightcrawler is mysteriously M.I.A. in The Last Stand? Looks like someone is going to be scouring the game for an answer.
Prepare to fight like a hero, bub, as this one will have it out in retail this May. Until then, use your exceptional Web surfing superpowers to check out the first screens.
