Remember a time long ago when mobile phones were actually meant for making phone calls? Nowadays, we see companies cramming as much innovative technology, from games to the ability to take digital pictures, into their cellular gizmos as possible. Notwithstanding, the trend continues, as today, Superscape announced that it will be working together with Activision to develop a 3-D game based on the PlayStation 2 title Street Hoops for Java and Brew-based mobile phones. Superscape, who will create the game using 3D Swerve technology, plans to allow customers to download the game right onto their phones.

The mobile/wireless version of Street Hoops will feature two-on-two action on courts ranging from Venice Beach to Rucker Park. "Completing" a court requires four wins against four increasingly difficult teams, yet with wins comes cash, which can be well spent to unlock new courts or buy extra players. Street ballers in the game will include Headache, Hot Sauce and Speedy.

"We are delighted to be working with Superscape on the development of a version of Street Hoops for mobile phones," said Dave Anderson, Director of Business Development and Licensing for Activision, Inc. "We believe that Superscape's Swerve technology is a unique development platform, providing high quality images and the small file sizes which are essential for over the air delivery of mobile games."

"The development and distribution of high quality 3D content for mobile phones, utilising well- established IP such as Street Hoops, is a key part of Superscape's strategy to establish Swerve as the de facto standard for 3D on wireless devices," said Kevin Roberts, CEO, Superscape Group plc. "I am excited by the opportunity to work with Activision, a leading global publisher, and believe that this new version of Street Hoops will prove a hit with network operators, handset manufacturers and consumers."

The Brew version of the wireless Street Hoops game will be available in Q3 2003, while the Java version should be available soon after in Q1 2004.
