Snoopy Takes to the Skies

Looks like Namco found a use for that Snoopy license.

"Snoopy's longstanding rivalry with the nefarious Red Baron persona is one of the most acclaimed Peanuts storylines, giving Namco the perfect premise to create a family-friendly video game," reminisced Jeff Lujan, Business Director at Namco Hometek, Inc. "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron introduces an original gameplay experience with high-flying aerial action that is sure to entertain kids of all ages and extend this classic story's legacy."

That's right, Snoopy. Dogfighting. The Red Baron. The quote more or less says all, we suppose, but that won't stop us from rewriting the entire press release to pad this story with more useless fluff, because that's the kind of journalism we practice here. Plus, it's Snoopy, man, you can't not love the guy - er, dog.

The game appears to be pulled straight from any number of Peanuts strips where Snoopy falls asleep in that spine-cracking position on top of his dog house and dreams of dog fighting against the Red Baron back during the days of World War I where chivalry and respect was something pilots still had for one another. Not that any of that will make an appearance in the game, we're sure.

With 50+ single-player and co-op missions on both the PS2 and PSP, Snoopy will probably occupy himself with shooting other things besides the goodly Mr. von Richthofen and his Fokker biplane - especially considering Namco is promising six environments and customizable planes. If it sounds like we're excited about what's more or less a kid's game, it's because we are. Shooting stuff out of the sky never gets old, and jumping into a Sopwith Camel to gun down planes sounds just plain awesome.

If the screens we managed to get our hands on are any indication, the game may indeed end up being fun, though of course we'll have to wait (and hope) to see how it all turns out. Control will be the cornerstone of the experience, so you'd better not screw that up, you hear us, Namco? Oh man, where's that copy of Sky Odyssey...
