If you're like us and are oft burning the midnight oil to the background noise of [adult swim], you might be familiar of a stylish little anime series by the name of Samurai Champloo. If the cross-genred content of each episode seems to ring a bell, as well is should. In addition to offering up a tasteful mix of action, adventure and comedy, splashed with over-the-top aesthetics and driven by a primarily hip-hop soundtrack, it's the handiwork of Cowboy Bebop writer/director Shinichiro Watanabe.
It's also on its way to the PlayStation 2.
Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked, which Namco Bandai promises to draw "heavily from the brash, over-the-top aesthetics," is a game the latter member of the publishing supergroup has been cooking up for a good while now. In fact, they're so on top of things, development has already finished on the title. Yep, it's done, gold and off to production. Crazy, right?
The game plays out as a "lost episode," casting players as one of three playable characters: the reckless samurai Mugen who fights with the flash of break-dancing, the Bushido-obiding Jin and even a secret character exclusive to Sidetracked. Your mission is, uh, simple: traverse the stranded land of Ezo (or current day Hokkaido), deposing of all mercenaries, swordsmen, assassins, mythical beast and... gangster monkeys who stand in the way, to track down a sunflower-scented samurai. Yeah, we're not too sure either.
Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked will be bringing the amalgamated action to stores on April 11. Looking for some preview-type info on the game before then? We've got you covered.
