For what we can only imagine are centuries now, kids (and those young at heart) have loved to play "what if" with random mythical or iconic characters. What if Batman and Wolverine decided to team up for reasons that any comic nerd would quickly dismiss? What if the cast of The X-Files showed up on CSI? It's fun to play the game, letting the imagination run-wild, but in most cases, it's a legal and licensing impossibility. But, if you confine the prospects to a single universe or company, things get a little easier. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is pairing up almost 150 characters from the comics, and last year's Nicktoons Unite!, did well enough to warrant another Nick-themed "what if?"

Nicktoon: Battle for Volcano Island, they called it, and it's now officially headed for stores. The idea this time around? SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, Jimmy Neutron and Danny Phantom characters all collide for a hot-swappable (drop in/out at any time) mélange of Nickelodeon universes all slammed together.

"The release of last year's Nicktoons Unite! quickly took the brand to a top 10 ranking among licensed kids' video game properties and has proven to be incredibly successful with more than one million units shipped to date," boasted John Ardell, THQ's director of global brand management. "We're very pleased to be building on this brand with a new adventure for fans of these wildly popular Nickelodeon shows."

"Each of the shows included in Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island are among the top animated shows for kids on television," added Paul Jelinek, vice president of digital media products, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. "We are thrilled to bring the characters from four of our most popular shows together again, adding to our exciting THQ video game offerings."

And there you have it. The publisher is happy, the licenser is happy, and all the gamers... well, we'll find out about that when the reviews come in, won't we?
