BREAKING NEWS: Wrestling Games Are Popular!
No. Way. For Serious? Even that one SmackDown game? Yep, even that one.
Published: August 14, 2007
The best part about the complete lack of traffic that we get here at TPS is that there's no influx of angry, misspelled e-mails from wrestling freaks any time we dare mention that we find their precious games to be clunky, painful messes. It's sort of like the PlayStation Network right now being blissfully devoid of smack talkers and cussing three year-olds because nobody has a headset and nearly everyone is playing the multiplatform version of the game on their 360.
Still, like the PSN, it's only a matter of time before our poo-pooing of wrestling games gets linked and the floods of hate mail come pouring in. It's not like we have any real pull over the wrestling superfreaks anyway, as evidenced by the fact that THQ has managed to have SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 to Greatest Hits on not only the PS2 and PSP, but on the 360 with their version, Platinum Hits.
"Achieving 'Platinum Hits' and 'Greatest Hits' status simultaneously is a tremendous honor that speaks to the continued growth and development of the SmackDown vs. Raw video game franchise," beamed Scott Guthrie, THQ's SVP of North American sales and distribution. "We look forward to seeing its popularity expand further as we bring WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 to seven platforms this holiday season, including the franchise's return on Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and wireless devices, and its debut on the Wii home video game console, Nintendo DS and the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system."
"We are extremely pleased with the success of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 and our ability to release 'Platinum Hits' and 'Greatest Hits' editions respectively for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and PSP system," droningly reiterated Nelo Lucich, VP of interactive at JAKKS Pacific. "This milestone demonstrates the continued strength of the WWE brand among video game fans and we believe the reduced price point will bring the WWE video game experience to an even larger audience."
Seriously? Seven friggin' platforms? Clearly THQ isn't messing around; if you own a video game system or handheld, you will play a wrestling game on it or THQ will come find you and make you pay. That's why we give our review copies to freelancers, who then promptly disappear and leave us without a review. Don't be like that wrestling game fans!
