If ever there was a question of whether or not Namco Bandai Games (specifically the latter half of the partnership) could capitalize on something being hot, you need only look at the number of Naruto games that have hit in the past couple years. Though it pales in comparison to the Japanese releases, the rapid-fire style of anime- and manga-inspired fighting games been relentless.

Except Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles isn't a fighting game. Oh, it has fighting elements, but things have shifted to a more action/adventure-style approach to the continuing saga of precocious orphan Naruto on his quest to become the ultimate ninja. If that last bit sound familiar, it's probably because Naruto: Ultimate Ninja just hit a little over a month ago. Like we side, rapid-fire.

"On the heels of the resounding success of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja, fans of the series have been clamoring for new Naruto adventures on the PlayStation 2," explains Naruo Uchida, Namco Bandai Games America's Senior VP."With Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles, we will deliver another layer of gameplay depth to the franchise by introducing an original storyline and providing an opportunity for fans to engage in large-scale ninja combat, all the while exploring familiar locations of the Naruto universe in an adventure setting."

Right now, details are fairly scant. We know the game will be more open, in full 3D and offer some of the same ninja-fueled stunts that have been seen in past games, though the combat will be a little deeper -- or at least more customizable. Though the game will still feature other characters from Naruto's ninja school, the Big N himself is the focus of the game. This allows developer Cavia (hey, stop rolling your eyes, it could be good!) to build in a combo system that's user-customizable, and general combat that allows players to attack from afar with stuff like shurikens, or get in close for more hands-on melee combat.

The game, complete with new storyline that puts Naruto in the role of savior of the Hidden Leaf Village and a chance at becoming the Hokage, will arrive some time this Winter. When? Only a ninja knows...
