MX vs. ATV Untamed

Here's Mud in Your Eye

Like the MX vs. ATV games? Good, play Untamed on the PS3.

I don't normally do this, but it's rare that I can't find a single reason to enjoy a game on one platform vs. another. Without question, Rainbow Studios' MX vs. ATV games are a blast -- particularly if you haven't played them yet because as I said in our PS3 review, the formula is good, but it's more or less run out of steam with this last game. The problem is that the PS2 version of MX vs. ATV Untamed isn't done by Rainbow Studios, it was developed by Incenerator Studios, and it breaks everything that was good about the series.

I honestly don't even want to go into the whys, such is the sour taste the game has left in my mouth, so let's just say the physics are entirely broken, the graphics are deplorable (it honestly could be mistaken for a PS one game at times), the online was wonky and laggy and the game just plain doesn't feel like the same product as the PSP or next-gen versions. It's not even a case of the other games looking better, they play better -- infinitely so -- and the PS2 version just shouldn't be bothered with.

Period.

If you have to play another MX vs. ATV game, go get Untamed on the PS3 or PSP -- or better still just play the previous ones on the PS2. Not only are the older games an order of magnitude better than this dreck, but they're probably a lot cheaper at this point too. Seriously, stay far, far away from this game on the PS2. It's not worth it.
The Verdict
4.0

Handing off the game from Rainbow to Incinerator Studios was a bad idea. A baaaaaad idea. If you must play the games, stick to the PSP or PS3 versions. No, really.

5.0Graphics:

Absolute crap, from framerate to textures. What the hell happened?

7.5Sound:

The sound fares better than the graphics, but then there's not a whole lot here to screw up.

4.5Control:

If the visuals were bad, then the floaty, unresponsive, overly-squirrelly controls for almost all of the vehicles are a nightmare.

5.0Gameplay:

There are still a ton of events to play through, but you'll be fighting the controls and all those tears welling up in your eyes as you look at the game while you do it.
