For years, Sony Computer Entertainment America's first-party MLB series has been a struggling one, seemingly always falling to the back of the line with stiff competition from Electronic Arts' and 2K Sports' respective baseball franchises. Over the years, though, the series has picked up quite a bit of steam, with each year's iteration improving upon the previous, and with MLB 2006, SCEA's once-lackluster rendition of America's Pastime has reached some pretty stature ground.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise, then, that SCEA is looking to strike while the iron's hot. By that, we mean they have today announced MLB'06: The Show, the latest build upon the now "critically acclaimed" franchise, for both the PlayStation 2 and PSP.

All-new gameplay modes are hitting the diamond this year, namely Rivalry Mode, doing just as its name suggests with rivalry stat tracking to boot, and King of the Diamond, pitting players in the ultimate head-to-head showdown of pitcher versus batter. The Show promises some pretty drastic presentation enhancements, not which of the least is a Progressive Broadcast. To call the games is a new Three-Man Booth, with commentary from Rex Hudler, Matt Vasgersian and Dave Campbell.

On the field, MLB'06: The Show introduces the new Game Time Decisions feature, key to tweaking your line-up in those crucial times during the game. Speaking of line-up, the 40-Man Roster is your chance to manage all 40 players of a ball club. Topping things off is yet another extensive online outing, with 32-man tournaments, downloadable rosters, instant messaging and then some. Gameplay favorites like Career Mode (sporting the new Career Spotlight), the Pitching Confidence Meter, and Guess Pitch , among others, are also back for another year.

"By presenting gamers with all the finer details and nuances from the diamond, such as personalized player rituals and batting stances, broken bats, wild pitches and check swings, MLB'06: The Show delivers a true-to-life experience," ensures Scott Rohde, director, sports product development, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "With enhanced features and new gameplay modes, MLB'06: The Show provides baseball fans with an opportunity to truly feel what it's like to play in the Bigs."

Not to be left in the dust, MLB'06: The Show for the PSP is also bringing its game to the plate. This year's Season Mode is joined by the all-new Career Mode, with limitless create-a-player potential. Take on baseball's legends with the Historical Greats option, or get your game on wireless through either Ad Hoc or Infrastructure play.

MLB'06: The Show is set to hit the field in spring 2006 (though the SCEA fact sheets list March 1 as game time), so keep 'er here as we bring back the updates, and peanuts and Crackerjacks if we care to.
